Child Sexual Abuse Referrals
A Curriculum for Supervised Visitation Providers
From the Clearinghouse on Supervised Visitation
by: M. Sharon Maxwell, Ph.D and Karen Oehme, J.D.
"Child Sexual Abuse Referrals" is available for $66.00 in our General Store
and our Members Store.
This comprehensive training manual was created by the Florida Clearinghouse on Supervised Visitation
with a grant from the Task Force on Children's Justice, Florida Department of Children and Families.
It was developed in response to requests from supervised visitation service providers in Florida and
elsewhere for more intensive training on how best to provide appropriate services to children who have
been sexually abused by a parent or caregiver. The intent is that supervised visitation providers
can conduct training in their own programs using the Train the Trainer Guidelines included at the
beginning of each chapter.
The manual is divided into 7 chapters, each one designed to be a separate training session. Topics include:
- Overview of child sexual abuse issues and helping staff understand their feeling about sexual abuse
- Defining and understanding child sexual abuse
- The impact of child sexual abuse
- Juvenile Sexual Offenders
- System responses to sexual abuse allegations
- Best practice guidelines for assessing referrals and court orders in child sexual abuse cases
- Best practices for the visit: intake, intervention, documentation, and termination.
Throughout the manual are helps in dealing with the ethical dilemmas often present in difficult cases
as well as case reviews to help put the information presented in context. This manual not only serves
to train staff at all levels but is extremely useful as an on-going resource guide in developing policies.
